Cyprus ready to welcome back British property buyers

It’s been quite a year of it. First with the Brexit uncertainty and then Covid-19; the Cyprus property market has been on standstill. Buying property in Cyprus in 2020 has not been easy!

That’s all set to change hopefully very soon with Cyprus ready to welcome back British buyers.

There’s now only a few months between being able to fly to Cyprus, buy a property and get residency before the end of the year when Brexit will leave uncertainty of where British buyers stand with regards to applying for residency. So what are the obstacles in the way?

The Obstacles, buying property in Cyprus 2020

From the 4 July, Cyprus became exempt from the FCO advice against all non-essential international travel. This is based on the current assessment of COVID-19 risks. However, Cyprus has restrictions in place. Although tourist arrivals from a limited number of countries are now permitted, this does not currently include the UK.

If you are a UK resident but have not been in the UK for the last 14 days

The FCO advise that if you’re a British national travelling from a category A country and have not been in the UK (or any other Category C country in the last 14 days) you will be allowed to enter Cyprus. If you’re a British national travelling from a Category B country, and have not been in the UK (or any other Category C country) in the last 14 days, you will also be allowed to enter Cyprus with a negative COVID-19 PCR test result (taken in the previous 72 hours).

There is hope that this is all set to change on 1st August, which will mean people can fly from the UK to Cyprus. The UK will change to a category B country provided that the country’s positive epidemiological data continues. This will mean people can fly to Cyprus from the UK if they have undergone a molecular test at a certified lab within 72 hours prior to departure and hold a certificate that demonstrates a negative PCR for Covid-19.

The good news is estate agencies are open. Viewings of property have commenced with social distancing measures in place. The market is ready for you once you can get there. The property market is competitive at the moment and there are some good deals available.
