Can you still move to Cyprus after Brexit?
Cyprus-paradise Island
Cyprus is a calm, peaceful Mediterranean island of breathtaking beauty and rich history. Its natural landmarks remain undeterred due to a commitment to preserve the island’s natural beauty, which is why we love Cyprus so much. The country has a laid-back vibe, perfect for anyone looking to escape the hustle and bustle of city life. This “Jewel of the Mediterranean” is a hotspot for ex-pats and tourists alike and it’s easy to see why. The country is an EU (European Union) member state. This means that Europeans from the EU can come and go without any restrictions. But what does this mean to a post Brexit United Kingdom? Can you still move to Cyprus after Brexit?
Moving to Cyprus post-Brexit
If you live in the UK and plan to move to Cyprus, then now is still a great time to make the move. The country already has a sizeable community of British ex-pats, numbering around 70,000. This means that even though the official language spoken is Greek in the south of the island, English is commonly understood as a means of communication as well.
British citizens had a visa-free status and could travel without any restrictions before 1 January 2021, that is, before Brexit came into effect. After Brexit however, UK nationals became non-EU country nationals, otherwise known as “third country” nationals (a term used to describe non-EU member states). As such UK nationals are now subject to the same rules and regulations as citizens from other non-EU member states. This means that while UK nationals can still move to Cyprus post-Brexit and buy property in Cyprus, it is slightly more challenging to do so.
Do you need a visa now if you want to move to Cyprus?
Yes. Since the 1st January 2021 British Nationals, including those with holiday homes or anyone wanting to relocate to Cyprus, can only stay on the island and other EU countries for a total of 90 days in any 180 day period. If you wish to stay longer you do need a visa.
In short, it is possible for UK nationals to move to Cyprus after Brexit. Sure, it will be challenging, but it will not be impossible. Aside from looking like a beach from a movie scene, Cyprus has a lot to offer. The island has a pleasant climate all year round, being a sub-tropical country, and is a popular tourist destination. It has a fledgling economy, which provides a multitude of job opportunities. These range from the tourist and hospitality sector to the gas sector.
Cyprus also has a low tax rate regime that attracts many offshore companies to set up bases in the country. The country, overall, has plenty of opportunities for immigrants and is an attractive option for anyone looking to move overseas.
Owning property in Cyprus
As a result of its booming economy, over the years the country has experienced a steady increase in property prices. Immigrants, particularly ex-pats, are willing to relocate since the country has much to offer. It has a stable economy, a developed infrastructure, a well-functioning healthcare system, and all other amenities that make life easier.
Despite this, the rent and cost of living in Cyprus are much lower than the average either in the US or the UK.
